How to hit targets without adding full-time RevOps
Posted 10 Aug, 2026 by Lewis Chawko
When you are behind on target, the reflex is to add capacity. More SDRs, a RevOps hire, more bodies against the gap. Sometimes that is right. More often it is the slow, expensive answer to a problem you would fix faster by tightening the engine you already run. You hit targets without adding full-time RevOps, and often without adding sales capacity either. The lever is efficiency, not headcount.
You can hit revenue targets without adding full-time RevOps, and frequently without adding sales capacity either. The lever is efficiency, not headcount.
Why hiring is the expensive answer to a revenue gap
New headcount comes with a lag and a cost. A new rep takes months to ramp. A RevOps hire takes time to find, onboard and get productive, and commits you to a permanent salary for what is often a fixed-term problem.
Worse, adding capacity to a leaky engine scales the leaks. More reps feeding a broken qualification process means more wasted effort, not more revenue. If conversion is the constraint, hiring adds fuel to an engine that is losing it faster than you pour it in.
The faster levers sit in the engine you have
Before you add anyone, work the parts of the system that move the number quicker and cheaper:
Stop the pipeline leakage
Find the stage transition where deals die and fix that first. A few points of conversion recovered at your weakest stage usually beats a quarter of extra top-of-funnel volume. The pipeline is rarely too small. It is leaking.

Focus reps on winnable deals
A small team's time is the scarce resource. Use fit and engagement signals so reps spend their hours on deals worth chasing, not the loudest or the oldest. Prioritisation alone lifts output without a single new hire.
Take time out of the cycle
Every avoidable delay between stages costs you deals and pushes revenue into next quarter. Cut the friction: faster handovers, simpler approvals, pre-empted security and procurement. A shorter cycle means more closes in the same window with the same team.
Give reps their selling time back
Reps lose hours to CRM admin and manual follow-up. Automate the logging, the routing and the reminders so the team spends its time selling rather than feeding the system. That is capacity you create without hiring it.

Make the forecast trustworthy
You cannot manage to a number you do not believe. A repeatable forecast, built on clean stages and hygiene, lets you see the gap early and act while there is still time to close it, rather than finding out in the last week of the quarter.
Fractional RevOps vs a full-time hire: where each fits
The catch is that finding and fixing these things takes senior RevOps expertise, the exact thing you were about to hire. The difference is you need the expertise, not necessarily the permanent salary.
A fractional RevOps partner gives you the senior fix sized to the work: diagnose the leakage, rebuild the forecast, automate the admin, then step back when the engine runs. You get the outcome that hits the target without carrying a full-time cost for a problem that does not need one year-round.
To be fair, sometimes full-time is right. Sustained scale, real complexity and a permanent need for in-house ownership all justify the hire. The test is whether you need ongoing capacity or a focused fix. If it is the fix, fractional gets you there faster and cheaper.
The build-versus-buy call depends on your stage as much as your problem. Click here to read our guide on RevOps in 2026 and when fractional fits scaleups.
What to do this quarter to close the gap
If you are behind and tempted to hire your way out:
- Find your worst stage transition and put the effort there, not at the top of the funnel.
- Re-prioritise reps onto winnable deals using fit and engagement.
- Strip one avoidable delay out of the cycle.
- Automate the admin eating your reps' selling time.
- Get the forecast to a state you trust, so you see the gap early.
Most teams find more revenue in their existing engine than they expected, and far faster than a new hire would deliver it.
The point
Headcount is the obvious lever and rarely the fastest one. Before you add full-time RevOps or more reps, get the engine you already run working properly. Hit the number by fixing the leaks, focusing the effort and reclaiming the time, then add people when the system, not the gap, calls for them.
